Your reference to Jesus and the great cloud of witnesses reminds me of a video I just saw about a large painting an artist is doing of Jesus' resurrection. He paints the "cloud of witnesses" in the mural...David, Daniel, Moses, etc. Pretty neat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yABivU-AKQ

I think that it is an issue of context. This is why knowing the verses that surround the verse we are familiar with or memorize is so important. In Romans 14-15 Paul is requesting that we have patience with each other regarding disputable matters concerning our freedom in Christ (as opposed to our slavery to the law). Going to the movies was one such issue a few years back. Ear piercing on men is one such issue today.

In 1 Corinthians 5:3 Paul is referring to sexual immorality with in the church. Paul is saying . This is not a disputable matter, and we are commanded to handle such issues seriously. Making a judgment on them and then making appropriate responses is part of our responsibility as believers. Imagine if you knew that a married man in our congregation was involved with a prostitute from time to time. It would be right to judge that as unbiblical and to address the issue forthrightly, always with the ultimate goal of the restoration of his relationship with God, his family and the church. But to leave it unaddressed would be actually be the unloving attitude.

We need to be careful to not feel the responsibility to judge and rebuke with every minor matter that we happen to notice in others lives. That is the whole point of Jesus plank in your eye, speck in you brothers eye comments in the Sermon on the Mount. But even then Christ says "You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye." (Matt. 7:5) If someone says we are to never to judge others, is taking some the bible out of context.

I'm curious what your thought is about Paul's note in 5:3 regarding passing judgement on the immoral one among the Corinthians: "And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present." Is this completely contextually different from Romans 14:13 (all of Romans 14, presumably) in that Romans 14 is specifically regarding not passing judgement on matters of dispute related to one's holiness? Did that make any sense? :-)

As we found out in the Wednesday night Bible study a few weeks ago that the Lord's prayer has something to help us too:

Matthew 6:13 (New International Version, ©2010)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’

may be better stated as:

Matt 6:13 And don't let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one. NLT

Luke 4:13 (New International Version, ©2010)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Satan will wait for other opportunities for our temptation, it is good for us to ask for God's help to keep us from falling into or yielding to those temptations when they come.

Pastor brings up some interesting points about motives. I would like to encourage everyone to think about what you have, because we typically don't miss it until we don't have it. Worship is extremely important as the "Church family" and God tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves (Hebrews 10:25). The Pastor comments reminds me of:

2 Cor 9:7-9 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. "For God loves a person who gives cheerfully." 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. NLT

God does provide all we need and it is not all monetary. God spared me with my accident for a reason. I have had many trials since then and I do sometimes ask God, and you saved me for this? Then I am reminded that there is a reason for this and sometimes I wonder what are my motives and do they line up with the word of God. It is a good thing to take a look at why we do things and see if our motives are in line with God's instructions. I understand what Pastor is saying about these habits, but these are all good habits for Christians to have. They should be stepping stones for greater giving. This also reminds me of

Matt 6:20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. NLT

Often times I find myself asking; is it wrong to purposely do heavenly things so that I will indeed have treasures in the Heaven? Then I am reminded that is where our focus is supposed to be anyway.

And finally we will get to these:

Luke 6:38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." NLT

This passages I can speak from experience and it has more application than financial which I often have heard it applied to. If you give love generously you will receive love generously. I had a friend tell me that the tithe breaks a lot of people, on the contrary how can one not afford to tithe (Malachi 3:10)?

It is interesting that it is sometimes the faith of someone else that brings healing to someone. The centurion in Matthew 8 in another example. But here it seems to be the faith of the friends that brings forgiveness (spiritual healing?). This account seems to be in line with James 5:13-16 where there is confession for sins between brothers, payers of a righteous man and healing (although in James 5:16 the word for "heal" in the NIV is the exact same word that is translated "save").

This is certainly an encouragement to be praying for both the physical and spiritual healing that needs to happen in the lives of people we know and care about, knowing that our prayers do matter.

Funny you said this.. I was thinking the same thing as I read that passage. Mark's account is just slightly different from Matthew 9, but the imagery blew me away. I found the wording particularly interesting, namely "When Jesus saw THEIR faith"..

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

I once heard a sermon on Mark 2:1-12 that really stuck with me. The take-away was, if you really care about your friends and family then RIP OFF THE ROOF and somehow, some way do something to help them meet Jesus.
