Each week of the DISCIPLE series we will be asking a question and suggesting a motion.

Question:

What is a disciple?

Motion:

Passionately Pursue Jesus

This weeks Text:

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV84)

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Have you ever really asked yourself, “What is a disciple?”  And, and even braver question to ask is “Am I a disciple?”  If you consider yourself a Christian, or a follower of Christ, these are imperative questions to ask.

Jesus had much to say about being a disciple, what is was … and what it wasn’t. This weeks sermon deals directly with this question of what is a disciple and proposes an answer after digging into Jesus teaching:

A Disciple is someone who is Devoted In Every Way to Jesus Christ.

Being a disciple is not about saying something, doing something or giving something.  Jesus is after something deeper, and more important, that externalities.  Jesus is after our heart, our devotion.

Not that those external things are unimportant.  It is just that unless Jesus has our heart, everything else is just a mask we wear to look good to Jesus and to everyone else.

So what is the relationship of our heart and our actions?  I would put it this way:

Discipleship is a heart issue that works itself out through all of our extremities.

Whether you are giving your heart to Jesus today for the first time or you have been working our what that means for the last 60 years, my prayer for you is that today is a day where you can say you are Passionately Loving Jesus.
